NORDIC URBAN LAB – STUDIO ATHENS

Our partners at Metropolis / Københavns Internatonale Teater are organizing the fourth Nordic Urban Lab. From 9-11 October, it will take place online from Athens with a Greek-Nordic dialogue about the role of art/culture in relation to creating more open, vibrant, and sustainable urban futures. They will move from theories and strategies to artists’ individual, site-specific practices. Trevor Davies from Metropolis will be acting as moderator.

18 Nordic and 18 Greek speakers are invited to talk about the challenges common across cultures and borders, and how we can learn from each other’s experiences.

AGENDA

From 9-10 October at 11-19, four thematic sessions are held online with Nordic and Greek speakers:

  • Culture & urbanism
  • Cities & citizenship
  • Reviving communities & neighborhoods
  • Artistic practice in the urban context

On 11 October at 9-18, Walking Athens – a day of walks in 12 districts, will take place. Every hour, a new artist/city planner streams his/her will share reflections from somewhere in Athens. It will be a very different story about the city than the one you read in the guidebooks. All sessions are live-streamed.

Metropolis has previously held the Nordic Urban Lab in Copenhagen, Gothenburg/Borås, and Helsinki as a Nordic version of the Metropolis Laboratories. It serves as a knowledge platform that, in addition to Metropolis’ artistic activities, explores the intersection between art, architecture, and urbanism.

Nordic Urban Lab is a platform for professionals of all creative industries. For artists and designers working in the public space, for architects and planners interested in alternative approaches to urban transformation, for researchers, students, activists, municipal employees, etc. with an interest in cultural planning.

Nordic Urban Lab Athens 2020-21 will be a two-step programme due to the continued restrictions on international travel. The second part is scheduled to take place live in May 2021.

You can follow the entire Lab online. It is free to attend, and everything is in English.

If you want to participate, please send an email to nulathens2020@gmail.com. Then you will be sent the final programme and a link to Zoom.

Nordic Urban Lab 2020-21 is organized by Metropolis in collaboration with HeterArt and several Greek partners. Primary support includes the Nordic Culture Fund as well as the Greek Ministry of Culture and the City of Athens.
